about the project

Kazakhfilm Studio is a cultural symbol of Kazakhstan a place where national cinema was born, capturing the countrys identity, traditions, and spirit of its time. The reconstruction project by Basire Design sets forth an ambitious goal: to preserve this historic legacy while imbuing the space with new meaning and possibilities. The studio complex is reimagined as a contemporary media hub uniting film production, public areas, and cultural venues. The guiding principle is transparency both physical and symbolic. The façades of the new buildings are designed with lightweight glass structures, creating the impression of an open, inviting space for the public. The studios original buildings are carefully integrated into the new design, their minimalist aesthetic enhanced with modern materials metal, glass, and concrete. Facade accents take the form of perforated panels featuring portraits of iconic figures from Kazakh cinema, creating the effect of a commemorative gallery. The reconstructed studio is no longer just a filming location it becomes a center for cinematic art, hosting festivals, masterclasses, and lectures. Open public zones, cafés, libraries, and screening halls foster an active environment for creative exchange. The entire architectural vision is built around the concept of cinematic light. Panoramic glazing and a thoughtfully designed artificial lighting system produce a play of shadows and reflections, evoking the feel of film exposure. The airy, pavilion-like forms echo the natural surroundings, while nighttime illumination transforms the studio into a glowing art object.
